Hockey is the most exciting and fast-paced sport of all time I said what I said.
So its a bummer that hockey movies are few and far between.
Movies like Miracle center (ice) on the 1980Olympicsand how the Cold War affected the battle for gold.
Here are seven of the best hockey movies that deserve a celly.
So, how could a wholesome and arguably corny 90s movie inspire such a scrum-happy league?
Well, if it werent for the film, the Anaheim Ducks wouldnt exist.
Of course, I had to sacrifice my algorithm to double-check these details.
Naturally, the kids win him over and he sees the error of his ways.
That was pretty groundbreaking for 1992 especially as Julie (Colombe Jacobsen-Derstine) is the teams best goalie.
The movie certainly inspired a slew of young girls to take up the sport.
Thats exactly 31 years after The Mighty Ducks debuted, highlighting how revolutionary that plot was at the time.
Gainey (Lewis), Matt Doherty (Les), and Marguerite Moreau (Connie).
Beyond film sequels, the franchise even got a TV reboot in 2021 on Disney Plus.
How is this at all relevant to a hockey movie?
The same notoriety wasnt given to Willie ORee, the first Black player in the NHL.
Sadly, ORees accomplishments were largely lost to time for decades.
It baffles me that it took until 2019 for ORee to score a documentary that tells his story.
We have players like ORee to thank for that.
Im always astounded by the grace of people like ORee.
ORee narrates much of the doc himself and it even has cameos with the greats like Wayne Gretzky.
At its core, Face Off: Winter Comes Early is a romantic drama meets sports movie.
The core relationship in the film feels fresh and unique, even today.
It even features the now-defunct California Seals.
Its safe to say that theres no other movie like this and there probably wont be again.
Hate it or dont hate it, but thats something special.
The NHL gets that, as the movie is honored in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Its basically an inside joke to hockey fans.
They didnt even have to be particularly good at hockey they just needed to pack a mean punch.
So, thats where Doug (Seann William Scott) comes in during the movie Goon.
Theres a reason they call NHL pipeline leagues (the AHL and ECHL) the jungle.
Its brutal out there.
The men in blue serve up some serious black and blue.
NHL fans have long since earned a bit of an intense reputation, and the 70s were no different.
During the Jan. 6 game, a Flyers fan dumped his overpriced beer on the then-Blues coach Al Arbour.
The great thing about Slap Shot is that theres humor for everyone.
But the inside jokes shared between the writers and people fluent in hockey culture are plentiful.
For example, the intro serves as somewhat of a comedic dictionary for hockey lingo and penalties.
(Seriously, go look up the best penalty box compilations.

‘Ice Guardians’
One of the most controversial aspects of the NHL is fighting.
Anyone who screams, Shoot the puck at their own team can attest to that.
Yet the enforcer role is dying, and the 2016 documentary Ice Guardians tells the history of the role.
Dont get me wrong Im a huge proponent of keeping fighting in hockey.
He could haveblinded him.
And what was his penance?
A measlytwo-game suspensionafter it was ruled intentional.
I mean, really?
Meanwhile, former King Brandom Lemieux got a five-game suspension for biting another player.
But thats not even the worst of it.
And now someone lost their life over it.
In many cases, it seems like star players receive more lenient rulings for these kinds of plays.
So, what was Wilsons punishment?
He was fined a pathetic $5,000 (pocket change to an NHLer).
And you know what the Rangers had to pay after rightly criticizing the absurdly lax ruling?
To boot, the teams general manager and president got the axe for the admiral statement.
Sufficed to say, Ice Guardians is a phenomenal watch that should be required viewing for any hockey fan.
Brett Harvey directed the documentary.
